In this piece, I first provide a snapshot of the scenario in India and then proceed to deconstruct the oppressive norm of feminine hairlessness by looking at it through a feminist lens. Indians, much like other parts of the world, have entirely bought into the seemingly inextricable link between gendered notions of hairlessness and femininity. Even feminists, aware of the complex paradigm that surrounds the compulsion to remove body hair struggle to break away from this seemingly unbreakable notion of a hairless ideal.

The popular accounts post photos of women showing off their armpits in all their unshaven glory. The latest addition, Armpit Museum, which launched just three days ago, posts images of women with their arms held high, proudly showing off wisps of hair - some even dyed in bright colours. A series of Instagram accounts aims to celebrate women going au naturel by sharing photos of them showing off their unshaven underarm hair. But despite thousands of followers between them, reactions are mixed.
